Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has been handed a two-game suspension for allegedly threatening Espanyol players following their Copa del Rey match on Wednesday, the club announced Friday.

Barcelona plans to appeal the suspension.

Suarez and Espanyol midfielder Papakouly Diop had a verbal altercation in the tunnel after Barcelona’s 4–1 victory, according to the official’s notes.

Diop was given a red card at the end of the match for using offensive language toward Suarez. After the match, Suarez waited for Diop and the Espanyol squad in the tunnel and shouted threats at them, according to the official’s report.

“[Suarez] said: ‘I’m waiting for you, come here! You’re a waste of space,’” the report said, according to The Guardian. “It provoked a confrontation between players of both clubs and the security guards had to get involved, as did coaches of both teams.”

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique dismissed the accusations, and Barcelona plans to argue that Suarez did not use offensive words in its appeal of his suspension.

Should Suarez’s suspension be upheld, he could miss the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals.
